Baseball Takes Two from Mount Vernon Nazarene

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - The University of Saint Francis (Ind). The Cougar baseball team took on the Mount Vernon Nazarene a university Cougars on Thursday afternoon. They battled all day and came away with two wins to increase their win streak to 12. 

Perry Stow had a quality start in this one, only allowing one run across six innings while striking out 5. In the top of the second, a Callan Stauffer two-run double broke the scoreless tie, followed by a Jayden Lepper RBI single, an error, and an Ayden Lichtensteiger single to make it a 5-0 game. MVNU scratched 1 in the bottom half to make it 5-1. Lepper got it back with an RBI single in the following inning. USF then scored again on an Eli Riley RBI single in the sixth. MVNU managed to keep it close by getting 4 runs across in the bottom half of the 7th, making it a two-run ball game at 7-5. USF would bring in Graham Kelham for another save opportunity in the ninth. He only allowed one run in the final inning and struck out two to get his 10th save of the year. Cougs on top 7-6.

Luke Siren gave USF another great start in game two. Going five innings with no earned runs and 5 strikeouts. Lepper scored on a wild pitch in the first to give them an early 1-0 lead. USF scored 4 in the second inning from a Callan Stauffer RBI single, Xavier Croxton RBI double, Sam Pesa sacrifice fly, and a Lichtensteiger RBI single. They then tacked on two more in the fourth from a two-run single by Riley. MVNU scratched one in the bottom of the fourth to make it 7-1, but Casey Henry came out of the bullpen going the last two innings and getting a punch out as well. USF sweeps the day winning this one 7-1. 

There were many key contributors on the day for the Cougs. Perry Stow, Luke Siren, Casey Henry, Graham Kelham, andBlaine McRae were all great on the mound. Lepper had four hits and two RBIs on the day. Riley had two hits to go along with four RBIs at the plate. And Lichtensteiger had three hits and three RBIs to help out the Cougar offense.

The Cougars are now 33-14 and 23-11 in conference play. They will wrap up the regular season on Friday against the Mount Vernon Nazarene Cougars at 1:00 PM est. They are currently 21-23 overall and 17-17 in conference.
