Cougars Pitching Goes Cold in Sweep Against IWU Wildcats
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - On Saturday afternoon, the University of Saint Francis Cougars (19-13; 8-8 Crossroads) took on The Indiana Wesleyan Cougars in a mid-morning doubleheader as the Cougars were looking to get revenge at home after dropping two at IWU's home doubleheader, but pitching and offense struggled as they dropped both games 11-1 and 13-6.
The game would start in the favor of the Wildcats as through four innings they managed to muster a 7-0 lead off back-to-back doubles, a two-run home run, and a solo home run. This offensive push from Wildcats would continue on the defensive side as the Cougars were virtually shut down from seeing the bases through four innings.
The Cougars however wouldn't go quietly as Tyler Prince would come out in the bottom of the fourth and would hit a solo home run to start.
The Wildcats however would answer back to this solo home run and three runs scored off errors committed by Saint Francis. This extended the lead to 11-1 in the bottom of the seventh. The Cougars would ultimately have no response to this might, and it would end in a run-rule through seven innings.
The Cougars would drop their first in the two-game series 11-1 through seven innings via mercy rule. Starting pitcher Deron Swanson suffered the loss after allowing seven runs on six hits in four innings including a couple home runs.
In the second game in the two-game series, the Wildcats would open the inning by hitting a two-run home run to command a 2-0 lead. But come the bottom of the second, the Cougars offense came to life.
It started with Tyler Prince being walked to score a run. Then a hit parade would commence in which two singles, one sacrifice fly, and an error would allow the Cougars to gain five runs to make it 5-2 to close out the second inning. The Wildcats would answer back in the top of the third scoring three runs off a walk and a double to bring the game to a 5-5 standoff.
The standoff would end in the top of the fifth once the Wildcats took the momentum back scoring four runs to take a 9-5 lead. The Wildcats would end up almost securing their victory with a three-run home run, and a run scored off a triple to put the Wildcats up on A 13-5 lead. While the Cougars did try to rally with Mike Jovanovic scoring a run in the seventh. It would not be enough for the Cougars to overcome the deficit.
The Cougars would lose this game 13-6 and would drop both games at home in their doubleheader series. The Cougars will play again Monday, April 4th with a 1 PM start time against the RV Taylor University Trojans (24-10; 14-4 Crossroads) to start another doubleheader series beginning at 1:00 pm.
