Struggles Continued for Cougars Against IWU Wildcats

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – On Friday afternoon, the University of Saint Francis Cougars (19-12; 8-8 Crossroads) traveled to Marion, Indiana for a doubleheader against the Indiana Wesleyan University Wildcats (15-14; 10-6 Crossroads) but were swept by scores of 12-1 and 11-5.

After a rough doubleheader Tuesday against the RV Taylor Trojans, matters didn't get any better for the Cougars in the opener.

Sophomore pitcher Casey Henry took the mound to start for the Cougars, and started off well in the early going, keeping the Wildcats off the scoreboard through the first three innings.

However, the Cougars were held scoreless through three themselves, but broke the deadlocked scoring in the top of the fourth. Third baseman Kaden Sullivan led off the frame with a single, and then came around to score on a balk for the game's first run.

Although the Cougars didn't score any more after that, and then the Wildcats responded in their half of the fourth with a two-out bases-loaded walk to tie the game at one.

Then in the bottom of the fifth, a leadoff home run gave Indiana Wesleyan the lead and what followed was a hit batsman, RBI-triple, and sacrifice fly as the Cougars fell behind 4-1. Henry's day was finished after that as he allowed four runs on eight hits in five innings pitched.

Matters only worsened in the bottom of the sixth. A leadoff single, followed by a double, walk, and three-run home run opened the game up for the Wildcats at 8-1. Then after the Cougars squandered a threat in the top of the seventh, Indiana Wesleyan put the game away with three more hits, a walk, and another three-run home run as the Cougars suffered the 12-1 loss.

In the second game, the Cougars went to work early with the bats, giving starting pitcher Cory Wolter a 2-0 lead in the top of the first after a sacrifice fly and bases-loaded walk. But in the bottom of the first, the Wildcats answered back with a couple runs of their own to tie the score back up.

Then in the top of the second, the Cougars went back to work with the bats as an RBI-groundout by catcher Xavier Nolan followed by a two-run double by third baseman Kaden Sullivan to go back ahead 5-2.

But then the Wildcats began to get to Wolter. They got a run back in the bottom of the third, and then tied the game back up in the fourth with an RBI-groundout and single.

Then in the fifth and sixth, the Wildcats put the game away with three runs in each frame as the Cougars' struggles continued.

Wolter suffered the loss in the second game after allowing seven runs on eight hits with three walks over four innings pitched. Kaden Sullivan had a big game with the bat as well as he went 2-for-3 with three RBI's.

The Cougars and Wildcats will wrap up their four-game series Saturday afternoon with a home doubleheader at Cougar Field beginning at 1:00 pm.
