RV Taylor Trojans Prove too Much for Cougars to Overcome

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - On Tuesday afternoon, the University of Saint Francis Cougars (19-10; 8-6 Crossroads) played host to the RV Taylor University Trojans (20-9; 11-3 Crossroads) at Ash Centre World Baseball Academy, but lost both games by scores of 13-1 and 11-0.

In the opening game, freshman pitcher Deron Swanson took the mound to start for the Cougars, and surrendered a first-inning run to put Taylor on top 1-0. After the Cougars went in order in their half of the frame, the Trojans went back to work in the second, as Swanson gave up four straight walks all with two outs, and a two-run single as Saint Francis fell behind 3-0.

Swanson's day was finished after the second inning, but matters didn't get any better for the Cougars.

A solo home run in the top of the third, followed by a two-run home run in the top of the fourth put the Cougars in an even bigger deficit, now trailing 7-1 after four innings.

Both teams went scoreless in the next two innings, but come the top of the seventh, the Trojans put the game away. It started with a two-run home run, and then a couple more walks, and then three straight hits, two singles and a double, plated six more runs for Taylor, and the Cougars had no answer in the bottom of the frame, as they fell by 12 via mercy rule with just three hits.

In the finale, sophomore Hunter Frost started for the Cougars, and began strong as the game went to the third inning scoreless. Then in the top of the third, the Trojans got the scoring started as they plated the first run of the game on a fielding error by Saint Francis.

Come the fourth, a single and then a two-run home run drove Frost from the game as Taylor extended their lead to 3-0. Meanwhile on offense, the Cougars struggled to string hits together as they were rendered scoreless through the first five innings.

In the top of the sixth, a two-out two-run double plated two more runs for Taylor, and then in the seventh it all unraveled for the Cougars. It started with a leadoff walk, and then what followed was five hits and a couple more walks as Taylor scored six more times, and finished off the shutout as the Cougars suffered the tough sweep.

The Cougars resume play on Friday afternoon when they travel to Marion, Indiana to begin a four-game series against the Indiana Wesleyan University Wildcats (12-13; 8-5 Crossroads) with a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 pm.
