Cougars Sweep Spring Arbor Behind Miller's Clutch Hitting & Wolter's Gem

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – On Monday afternoon, the University of Saint Francis Cougars (19-8; 8-4 Crossroads) traveled to Spring Arbor, Michigan to complete their four-game series against the Spring Arbor University Cougars (11-9-1; 6-6 Crossroads) and swept the doubleheader winning the opener 11-5 and the finale 6-3.

In the opener, the Cougars went to work with their bats. Left fielder Alec Brunson smacked a solo home run in the top of the first to put Saint Francis ahead 1-0 as sophomore pitcher Casey Henry took the mound to start the game.

The sophomore hurler did allow a second-inning run, but his teammates went back to work for him in the top of the third. Alec Brunson doubled and then designated hitter David Miller gave the Cougars the lead back with a two-run home run.

The score stayed 3-1 in favor of Saint Francis until the top of the fifth. The Cougars took advantage of a leadoff error by Spring Arbor, and a one-out two-run double by third baseman Kaden Sullivan extended their lead to 6-1.

On the mound, Henry continued to dominate Spring Arbor, as he worked six and a third innings allowing just three runs on seven hits while striking out five. Meanwhile, his teammates scored once more in the sixth, the seventh, and David Miller smacked a three-run home run for his second of the game in the top of the eighth.

Saint Francis' bullpen then came in and closed out Spring Arbor to give Henry and the team the win. David Miller was the hitting start in the opener with two home runs and five RBI's.

In the finale, freshman Cory Wolter started on the mound for Saint Francis, and likewise to the first game, the Cougars went to work in the first with the bats. A sacrifice fly and an RBI-groundout put the Cougars ahead 2-0 in the top of the first.

On the mound, Wolter pitched brilliantly through the first three innings, as he held Spring Arbor scoreless.

But then in the bottom of the fourth with the Cougars now leading 3-0, Spring Arbor got to the freshman hurler. Five hits and an error in the inning plated three runs for them as they tied Saint Francis.

Then in the top of the fifth, Saint Francis went right back to work on offense. A couple fielding errors by Spring Arbor put the Cougars back ahead, and then first baseman Tyler Prince singled home two more runs to regain their three-run lead, and it stayed 6-3 through the sixth and top of the seventh.

Wolter came in the bottom of the seventh and struck out the side to complete the sweep and earn the complete-game victory. Through seven innings pitched, Wolter allowed just three runs on seven hits and struck out eight batters.

The Cougars resume play on Friday afternoon when they return home to Cougar Field for a four-game series against the RV Taylor University Trojans (17-9; 7-3 Crossroads) with the doubleheader set for 1:00 pm.
