Xavier Nolan's Walkoff Allows Cougars to Complete Four-Game Sweep Over Goshen

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – On Monday afternoon, the University of Saint Francis Cougars (16-6; 6-2 Crossroads) played host to the Goshen College Maple Leafs (4-14; 1-7 Crossroads) in the final doubleheader of their four-game series and swept the doubleheader winning the opener 13-7 before winning the finale 4-3 in walk-off fashion.

In the opening game, sophomore pitcher Casey Henry started on the mound for the Cougars but struggled a bit in the opening frame as he issued a couple walks and the Maple Leafs plated their first run of the game.

Then in the third, matters started to get worse for the Cougars. The Maple Leafs loaded the bases to open the inning and took advantage of two hits and a fielding error to score three more runs and extend their lead over the Cougars to 4-0.

But in the bottom of the third the Cougars answered back with a couple runs on three hits and a wild pitch to cut the deficit in half.

The Maple Leafs added another run in the top of the fourth, but second baseman Sam Pesa answered back with a solo home run in the Cougars' half of the frame.

Henry's day was finished after the fourth as the Cougars bullpen took over. Then the Cougar bats went back to work in the bottom of the fifth as right fielder Xavier Nolan led off with a hit, and then Saint Francis scored four runs on RBIs by Tyler Prince, David Miller, Kaden Sullivan, and Sam Pesa to pull ahead 7-5.

Three more runs in the bottom of the sixth by the Cougars doubled their lead at 10-5, and despite a couple Maple Leafs runs scoring in the top of the eighth, the bullpen was magnificent as five relievers allowed just two runs on five hits in the final five innings as Saint Francis took the opener 13-7.

In the finale, pitcher Cory Wolter started for the Cougars and started strong as he shut down the Maple Leafs through the first couple innings. Meanwhile, his teammates went to work for him in the bottom of the first with a solo shot by designated hitter David Miller to go ahead 1-0.

But in the top of the third, the Maple Leafs tied the score, but Kaden Sullivan doubled home Miller in the bottom of the fourth to regain the lead for the Cougars.

Wolter continued his dominance on the mound as he shut down the Maple Leafs throughout the game, but with one out in the seventh Goshen got consecutive hits driving the sophomore hurler from the game.

Coming in to close it out was Kaden Sullivan, but a wild pitch moved runners to second and third, and then an RBI-groundout tied the game at two. Then the next batter hammered the first pitch for a base hit to left field scoring the go-ahead run and giving Goshen their first lead of the game at 3-2.

Then in the bottom of the seventh, the first two Cougars reached base, and then with one out, Xavier Nolan came to bat down by one with the ball game on the line. He then drove the first pitch down the right field line scoring the tying and winning runs and giving the Cougars the sweep.

The Cougars resume play on Wednesday afternoon when they play host to the Indiana Tech Warriors (9-9) in a single nine game at Cougar Field beginning at 3:00 pm.
