Cougars Sweep First Doubleheader Against Goshen

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – On Thursday afternoon, the University of Saint Francis Cougars (14-6; 4-2 Crossroads) played host to the Goshen College Maple Leafs (4-12; 1-5 Crossroads) at Cougar Field in the opening two games of a four-game series, and swept the doubleheader winning the opener 12-6 and taking the finale 8-0.

In the opening game, sophomore starter Hunter Frost took the mound to start for the Cougars and retired six of the first seven batters he faced. Meanwhile, his teammates went to work for him in the bottom of the first as left fielder Alec Brunson drove home the first run of the game, and designated hitter David Miller smacked a two-run home run over the right-center field wall to put Saint Francis ahead 3-0.

The Maple Leafs finally got to Frost in the top of the fourth as they scratched across their first run of the game, but the sophomore hurler held them from there.

Then in the bottom of the fourth, the Cougars went back to work with the bats. Catcher Tyler Rickert singled to spark Saint Francis and then a sacrifice fly by second baseman Jose Valdes-Sandoval and an RBI-double by right fielder Xavier Nolan made the score 6-1.

Frost continued to deal on the mound as he shut down the Maple Leafs bats through six solid innings. Then in the bottom of the sixth, the Cougars put the game away as they scored five runs on six walks and just one hit to pull ahead 12-1, and the Maple Leafs could not catch back up.

Goshen did manage a couple runs in the seventh and threatened in the ninth plating three runs to cut the deficit in half, but that was it as the Cougars claimed the opener by six runs.

Frost earned the win as he allowed just one run on four hits through six innings while walking four and striking out three.

In the second game, freshman starter Deron Swanson took the mound to start for the Cougars and pitched well in the early going. In the bottom of the first, Xavier Nolan led off with a walk, stole second, and came around to score the first run on Alec Brunson's RBI-single.

Saint Francis then doubled their lead in the bottom of the second scoring on a bases-loaded error.

Swanson continued his dominance on the mound as he shut down the Maple Leafs through the first five innings. Then in the bottom of the fifth, a two-out bases-clearing double by outfielder Collin Landrum broke the game open with Saint Francis now leading 6-0.

On the mound, Swanson was lights out, as he went the distance allowing no runs on just five hits.

The Cougars and Maple Leafs resume play on Monday afternoon due to weather with another doubleheader at Cougar Field beginning at 12:00 pm.
