GOSHEN, Ind. -- First and foremost, the University of Saint Francis opened Mid-Central College Conference play successfully on Tuesday night with a 3-0 win at Goshen College.
But USF did add two season 'firsts' in the winning process. Freshman goalie Emma McCoy got her first collegiate shutout and her Lady Cougar teammates supported her with a season-high for goals to end a six-game losing streak.
Sara Glassley, Angie Carusone and Katie Christian scored for the Lady Cougars (3-7 overall). McCoy finished with six saves, including at least three 'big' saves according to USF head coach Christy Young.
"We did a good job of maintaining composure and penetrating with the dribble," Young said. "When we got the penetration, we looked to slot the ball and we had composure on all three goals. Katie scored on a set play hitting a 25-yard shot in the upper 90."
Hilary Powers had two assists for USF and Melissa Ellisen one.
Glassley put USF in front 1-0 at 21:00 when Ellisen sent a through ball down the right side. Powers lifted a cross to the far post and Glassley was there for the tap in. Carusone made it 2-0 taking a Powers pass to the top of the box where Carusone hit a 15-yard strike.
Each team had three corner kicks apiece.
