FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Though the University of Saint Francis didn't like what they saw on the scoreboard, the Lady Cougars deserve kudos for battling ninth-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University for the full 60 minutes on a soggy pitch at Coonan Field on Friday afternoon.
The Wildcats won 2-0 on a bone-chilling, damp start to USF
Homecoming weekend. IWU improved to 11-2-1 overall, 5-1 in Mid-Central College Conference play. USF is 5-10 overall, 3-2 in MCC play with its final regular-season home contest at Coonan Field on Wed., Oct. 21 against Spring Arbor.
USF freshman keeper Emma McCoy was busy in goal making eight saves. Kristin Perrine banged a shot past McCoy when it richocheted off the cross bar off a corner at 24:13. McCoy made several diving saves, but IWU tallied again when Megan Marshall scored at 72:49.
"We could have given up at that point, but we didn't and had some chances in the time remaining," USF coach Christy
Young said. "We just couldn't catch a break, but we should be confident about the way we played and competed against the No. 9 team in NAIA."
IWU keeper Beth Nowak had six saves for the Wildcats. Jordan Kyle had the best shot to score from point blank range when Nowak dropped to the ground or slipped, but Kyle toed the shot too high.
Sara Glassly had two shots on goal while Kara Schultheis, Malorie Schon and Michelle
Domenick had one SOG apiece. IWU outshot USF 17-10, 12-4 in the first half with the wind at its back. IWU also had nine corner kicks, USF 4. IWU had a 7-1 edge in the first half.
Heidi Breckner and Marshall assisted on Perrine's goal and Kim
Walton assisted on Marshall's goal.
