Dey timeMCC's leading scorer named to NAIA All-American Team

KANSAS CITY, Mo. --  University of Saint Francis sophomore DeJovaun Sawyer-Davis has added NAIA All-American to his impressive basketball resume after leading all of NAIA in points scored during the 2008-09 regular season.

Sawyer-Davis (Anderson, IN / Anderson H.S.) was a second-team selection after he led the MCC in scoring with a 23.7 average in his first season at USF.  He was one of just four sophomores out of 30 players selected for one of three teams.

"It's really good to see Dey get rewarded for his hard work and what he did for our team," USF coach Jeff Rekeweg said. "To have what he did acknowledged on the national level is good for our program, for Dey and for our university. He led us in so many ways, and to do that after sitting out a year, and then become one of four  sophomores in the whole country to earn all-american selection says so much about his accomplishments."

The 6-foot-5, 244-pound forward was named MCC Player-of-the-Week three times this season and was NAIA Player-of-the-Week once. He had eight games of 30 or more points this season and scored 20 or more points in 23 games. He also recorded 14 double doubles during the regular season and finished fourth in MCC rebounding averaging 8.93 per game.

He was named to the MCC All-Newcomer team as a freshman at Indiana Wesleyan in 2006-07 and was a third team selection as well.

Sawyer-Davis finished regular season play with 712 points, most in NAIA. He added 30 in the Cougars' season-ending loss to Spring Arbor and finished with 742. Including post-season play, he finished second in points scored, fourth in points per game in NAIA Division II.

Sawyer-Davis is the sixth USF student-athlete to earn NAIA All-American status.
