MARION, Ind. -- The University of Saint Francis dropped a
94-61 decision at Indiana Wesleyan University in its final game of the regular
season on Wednesday night in Luckey Arena.
USF scored the game's opening basket, but the Wildcats scored 26 of the next 32
points to take early control with a 26-8 lead. By halftime, IWU (19-9, 8-7 MCC)
had opened up a 47-24 advantage leaving little doubt about the final outcome.
The
Cougars (14-16, 5-11) never threatened in the second half of play as Indiana
Wesleyan controlled play on both ends of the court. The Wildcats piled up an
84-47 lead at one point in the second half.
Indiana Wesleyan shot 54.7-percent (29 of 53) from the floor and 78.9-percent
(30 of 38) from the free throw line. The Cougars managed to shoot just 35
percent (21 of 60). USF only scored seven field goals in the opening period.
IWU out-rebounded the visiting Cougars 39-31.
Senior
Mike Steinau scored 15 points to lead USF scoring, 11 in the second half. Matt
Edmonds was the only other Cougar in double figures with 11 points.
Junior Jon Moon led the Wildcats with 20 points on 12-of-12 shooting from the
charity stripe. Sophomore center Zach Coverstone recorded his seventh
double-double of the season with 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Mike Steinau, who scored 37 points in the team's first meeting, recorded 15
points. He only had four at the half.
USF has a bye on the final weekend of the regular season and will learn where
it plays in the first round of the MCC Tournament after games are completed on
Saturday. The Cougars will play on the road on Wed., Feb. 27, at 7 p.m. The
game will be broadcast on WGL 1250 AM starting at 6:45 p.m.
