FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Nothing like a hard-earned 2-1 win over Taylor University on Senior Day, and with it icing on the cake.
Senior Mary Whisler scored what proved to be the game-winning goal for the University of Saint Francis and the Lady Cougars clinched a Mid-Central College Conference Tournament first-round home game next Saturday with their 11th win of the season.
USF honored Whisler and her three senior co-captain teammates -- Jane Kinney, Alissa Werst and Kelli Linson -- before the 1:30 p.m. kick-off, then improved to 11-5-1 and 4-3 in MCC play with the win. The win snapped a two-game slide for USF and halted Taylor University with a 3-game win streak.
Freshman Angie Carrusone gave the Lady Cougars a 1-0 lead and late in first half Whisler scored giving USF a 2-0 lead the Lady Cougars took into halftime.
TU, which finishes 4-4 in MCC play and 11-6 overall, finally cracked the scoreboard at 83:32 with Allison Guion's goal.
USF resumes play with its final regular season match of the season at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Bethel College in Mishawaka, Ind. BC is 1-5-1 in MCC play, 6-7-1 overall, and has lost five straight matches.
The Lady Cougars will play host to an opponent to be determined in the first round of the MCC Tournament at 3:30 p.m. at Coonan Field.
