2010 USF Women's Soccer Outlook

Refresh.  Restart.  Reward.  The Cougars are looking forward to what will be a thrilling transformation in the 2010 season. With thirteen improved returners and thirteen talented newcomers, the Cougars will be a mix of youth and leadership.  Led by third year head coach Christy Young, the team will challenge for an MCC title and a National Tournament appearance.

Leading the Cougars this year are seniors, Katie Christian and Kari Baughn. Returning sophomore, Jordan Kyle, will be the veteran forward as she is joined by freshman forwards Kelcie Lehman, Alyssa Makridakis and Leah Little. Kyle tallied 4 goals and 2 assists in the 2009 campaign and will look to play a major role this season.  Kelcie, Alyssa, and Leah were all 1st Team All Conference selections at their respective high schools and have made a habit out of challenging opponent’s defense.

At midfield the Cougars have a mix of experience to lead the way. Katie Christian, our MCC Defensive Player of the Year, and senior captain, may transition into the midfield as she is one of our most dangerous playmakers.  Joining her in the middle will be First Team ISGA All-State Freshman, Katelyn Strout, out of Carmel High School.  Emma Charais, a sophomore, and Holly Durkee, a freshman, will bring a strong presence to our holding midfielder spot.  Newcomer, Abigail Young, may also see some time in the midfield.  MCC All-Conference selection in 2008, Angie Carusone, will dominate with her speed and quickness on the outside alongside, junior, Jenna Mahon.  Newcomers, Leah Campbell and Samantha Sordelet will contribute to our midfield threat on the outside with their quickness.

Leading the backs will be junior captain Michelle Domenick and Mallorie Schon.  Sophomore, Lauren Greulich, will also look to be called on to play a pivotal role on the outside.  Rounding out the Cougars defense will be talented newcomers Rachel Bornhorst, Ashlynn Jenkins, Cori Nunley, and Michelle Hochstetler.

Competition for the goalkeepers spot will be fierce.  USF has undoubtedly the best goalkeeping team in the MCC.  Lead by senior and starter, Kari Baughn, the Cougars will bring in four outstanding goalkeepers.  Emma McCoy, a starter for USF last season will bring a strong, aggressive presence to the net.  Ashley Holt, a junior, was injured during the 2009 season but will look to make a major impact in goal in 2010.  Newcomer, Abbie Christian, will battle for a spot with her strength and size.

The Cougars will be a tough team beat with so much youth and talent.
