Athletic Training

Teamwork is essential to success and the University of Saint Francis is extremely pleased to partner with Fort Wayne Orthopaedics for the sports medicine needs of Cougar athletics.

Fort Wayne Orthopaedics Physicians and Lutheran Musculoskeletal Center sports medicine services are known for high quality car and immediate services to the Fort Wayne athletic community. Fort Wayne Orthopaedics’ 26 physicians, with multiple specialties (including sports medicine), rehabilitation personnel, and athletic trainers, have set the standard for complete and personal sports medicine coverage for Fort Wayne professional sport teams, colleges and high schools. FWO’s clinical facility is located 10 minutes from the USF campus.

Dr. Matthew Hicks

Dr. Matthew Hicks is an orthopedic specialist at FWO, as well as a former USF student athlete. His is well known in USF athletic circles for his basketball records and earned his B.S. degree in 1987. He was inducted into the USF Athletic Hall of Fame in October 2002. During his senior season at USF, Dr. Hicks was named to both the NAIA academic and NAIA basketball All-American teams. Dr. Hicks is pleased to be assisting in the care of athletes at his alma mater and will be heading the orthopedic team from FWO.

Tony Gambill

Tony Gambill, MS, ATC, LAT, CSCS is the FWO Head Athletic Trainer at USF. He started working with USF in January 2005 and has been an athletic trainer at the high school level for eight years at Bishop Dwenger, Central Noble and Paul Harding high schools. He has also worked at the professional level for three seasons in the CBA with the Fort Wayne Fury, two seasons in the NBDL with the Roanoke Dazzle and one season with the Fort Wayne Freedom. Tony and his wife, Michelle, have two children, Taylor, and Spencer.

Pam Kutella  Michael Salazar

Pam Kutella, ATC, LAT, will assist Gambill for part of the fall before joining the Fort Wayne Mad Ants of the NBDL. Michael Salazar, MEd, ATC, LAT, will work with USF during the winter months before returning to the Cleveland Indians for spring training.

Sports Medicine Aides

USF senior Katie Schilling will serve as head sports medicine aide this year. Other sports medicine aides for the 2008-09 school year include Adam Grover, Sara Schlotterback, Jessica Taghon, Ashley Everhart, Abby Schnur, Ryan Geraghty, Brittany Austin and Jordan Redding. The entire FWO sports medicine team is very pleased to provide complete medical coverage to the University of Saint Francis athletes.
